Nice article Natalie, and I think you make some really great points. Love the notion that we need to make entrepreneurship more accessible to more people, and the need to get beyond our fear of selling.
I do think you’re being a bit unfair to other startup communities around NZ — Sure the biggest hubs are in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, but there are growing communities in Tauranga, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Dunedin and Queenstown. I believe that we’re only a few years away from seeing exponential growth in the NZ startup ecosystem — the trouble with exponential growth is that you don’t notice the many small changes that take place before the hockey stick rapidly begins to curve. I think we’re nearing that point, and I’m not alone in thinking it.
Recreating Silicon Valley is not what New Zealand needs at all, but there’s something to be said for the critical mass of entrepreneurs and investors required to really benefit from the network effects of having lots of people teaching and learning from each other.
